How to Get People Talking About You (for the Right Reasons)
Let’s be honest: most marketing feels like shouting into the void.
You post on social, send an email, boost it, boost it again, maybe cry a little, boost it one more time… and still wonder:
“Why is no one actually talking about us?”
Here’s the truth: the best marketing isn’t what you say about your business — it’s what other people say about you when you’re not in the room.
Word of mouth is still the most powerful (and cheapest) form of marketing there is. It builds trust faster than any Facebook ad, and it influences half of all purchases.
But here’s the problem: most businesses don’t engineer word of mouth. They just hope for it and hope isn’t a strategy.
👉 90% of people trust recommendations from friends.
👉 50% of all purchases are influenced by word of mouth.
And here’s the kicker: most of those conversations don’t even happen online. They happen in real life — at the school gates, over dinner, in the pub.
But nobody shares average.
No one ever says:
“I had a completely forgettable experience with a very standard company this week!”
What do they talk about instead?
😂 The hilarious email that made them laugh.
✍️ The handwritten thank-you note that felt personal.
⚡ The way the service just nailed it without fuss.
✨ That one small, weird detail that made it memorable.
Those moments are what spark conversations. Those moments are what I call Talk Triggers.
The 3 Elements of a Great Talk Trigger
If you want to get people talking, your Talk Trigger needs to be:
✅ Unexpected If it’s normal, it’s invisible. Surprise creates stories. Example: A client of mine added a short personal voice note after every order confirmation. Was it weird? Yes. Was it memorable? Absolutely.
✅ Repeatable One-off freebies don’t build momentum. A consistent, different experience does.
✅ Shareable Can someone easily tell their mate about it?
“They gave me a surprise pastry” = shareable. “They sent me a 14-page PDF” = not so much.
Real-World Talk Triggers You Can Steal
Here are some simple ones businesses are already using:
🥐 A bakery that always adds an extra pastry “for the walk home.”
💇♀️ A hairdresser who texts a before-and-after collage after every appointment.
🐾 A vet who writes thank-you cards from the pet’s perspective.
🍺 A brewery that hides a “golden ticket” beer in every 10th box.
None of these are complicated. But they’re memorable, repeatable, and human. And that’s why people talk about them.
How to Find Your Own Talk Trigger
Start with this question: “What do people expect?”
Then ask: “What if we did the opposite — or added a twist?”
Examples:
If they expect a boring invoice → make it funny.
If they expect no follow-up → check in with a helpful tip a week later.
If they expect a generic thank-you → send a quick video message instead.
You don’t have to be outrageous. Just surprising enough to spark a smile — and a conversation.
The Payoff
Marketing is getting noisier and more expensive. But when your clients do your marketing for you, three things happen:
💰 You save money (less reliance on ads).
🤝 You build loyalty (clients feel seen and valued).
🌟 You stand out (because most of your competitors are still shouting into the void).
The outcome? You don’t just get clients — you get fans. Fans who talk about you, recommend you, and bring more business through the door.
Make your brand too good not to mention.
